Biography

Mirae Kim is an Associate Professor of Nonprofit Studies and the MPA Program Director at the Schar School of Policy and Government, George Mason University. Before joining the Schar School, she served as a faculty member at the Andrew Young School of Policy Studies at Georgia State University and the Harry S. Truman School of Public Affairs at the University of Missouri. Kim earned her PhD in 2014 from Rutgers School of Public Affairs and Administration, a master’s degree from Carnegie Mellon University, and a bachelor’s degree in English Literature from Seoul National University in South Korea, where she also spent over a year as an exchange student at Auckland University in New Zealand. Additionally, she was a member of the Penn Social Impact Doctoral Fellows Program led by Dr. Peter Frumkin.

Kim currently serves as a co-editor of Nonprofit Policy Forum and is a board member of the Association for Research on Nonprofit Organizations and Voluntary Action (ARNOVA). She is also part of the Nonprofit Trends and Impacts team, which conducts representative surveys of nonprofit organizations and provides publicly accessible datasets to enhance sector knowledge. Since 2015, she has led the “Nonprofit Organization Research Panel” (NORPanel) project, which delivers valuable and timely data for nonprofit practitioners. This initiative was inspired by her prior role as managing editor of Civic Engagement magazine, a publication dedicated to fostering public service discourse and broadening interest in the field.

Her research interests include nonprofit financial management, the role of nonprofits in civil society, nonprofit advocacy, arts and culture organizations, and government-nonprofit relationships. Kim has published extensively in leading academic journals, including Nonprofit and Voluntary Sector Quarterly, VOLUNTAS, Public Administration Review, American Review of Public Administration, Public Performance & Management Review, Nonprofit Management and Leadership, and Review of Public Personnel Administration.
